A Hands-On Lapidary Class for Jewelry Makers
In this small-group lapidary class, you’ll learn how to transform raw stones into polished cabochons. Perfect for setting into rings, pendants, or other handmade jewelry.
Instructor: Zach Wright
Dates & Time: Tuesdays, October 7th | October 21st | 10:00 am–1:00 pm
Cost: $150.00
Skill Level: No experience needed. Open to all skill levels.
Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to expand your skills beyond metal, this is a fun and rewarding way to explore the world of lapidary.
Because the class is limited to just three students per session, you’ll receive plenty of one-on-one attention as you work.
What You’ll Learn
First, you’ll select a raw stone and learn how to trim it to size using a diamond saw. Then, Zach will walk you through the step-by-step process of shaping and polishing it using lapidary grinding wheels.
Along the way, you’ll learn:
-
How to visualize and plan your cabochon shape
-
Proper handling and safety around lapidary tools
-
Techniques for refining the stone’s curve and surface
-
How to achieve a smooth, high-shine polish
By the end of class, you’ll walk away with at least one finished cabochon — cut, shaped, and polished entirely by you.
Where to Go Next
This lapidary class is a great standalone experience, but once you create your cabochon you can set it in our Benchwork Basics class. Once you’ve cut your stone, you’ll be ready to learn how to bezel set it into a custom piece of jewelry.
All tools and materials are provided. Just bring your curiosity — and get ready to uncover the beauty inside each stone.
