Keum Boo & Cold Connections
With Agnes Seebass
DATES: Saturday & Sunday, December 6th–7th · 10 AM – 4 PM
TUITION: $360 + $70 Kit Fee (tax included in materials price)
All Levels: No experience needed. Open to all skill levels.
About the Class
Join celebrated metalsmith Agnes Seebass for a two-day exploration of cold connections and the luminous art of Keum Boo. This workshop blends two essential techniques—mechanical joining and precious metal application—to open up new creative possibilities in your metalwork.
In the first section, you’ll learn to make wire and tube rivets to connect and layer metal components without soldering. These cold connections allow for movement, structure, and unique design solutions. Students will also experiment with the rolling mill to imprint patterns and textures into metal, creating dimensional surfaces ready for gold application.
Exploring Keum Boo
The second section dives into Keum Boo, an ancient Korean technique of fusing thin sheets of gold to silver using controlled heat and burnishing. You will be working primarily with Argentium silver. You’ll learn to apply 24k gold foil to add rich highlights and depth to your designs. Each participant will complete a pendant and/or pair of earrings, integrating their new riveting and Keum Boo skills.
Gold foil (approx. 1″) is not included in the kit but will be available for purchase from the instructor for around $25.
Why Take This Class
This class is an excellent follow-up to Benchwork Basics, offering the next step in refining your craftsmanship and surface design skills. With the rising price of gold, Keum Boo provides an affordable way to incorporate real gold into your work—creating luminous, high-value results without the cost of casting or fabrication.
