Enameling on 3-D Copper Forms

This workshop will address enameling on three-dimensional copper forms using both wet and dry application techniques. We will begin with pre-made seamless forms and alter them slightly with hammers if desired. The emphasis in this class will be on different ways of achieving line on enameled forms. Some of the techniques we will use for this essential element of visual design will include stenciling, diamond burs, and glass threads and chips, with a focus on combining and layering techniques. Attention to the final finish on pieces, a make-or-break design element will also be addressed.

The techniques learned can also be applied to jewelry scale work.

All Levels: No experience needed, open to all skill levels

 

Materials:

Each student should bring the following: 

    • Enamels (link: Thompson)
        • 2020 Clear
        • 1960 Black
        • 1030 White
        • Several (6-10, 2-4 oz each) closely related opaques and one or two that contrast sharply in the color palette of your choice.
        • Optional transparent enamels of your choice
    • 4” x 4” or larger Sheet of Mica (link: Thompson)
    • Thompson M-16B fine point sable brush or similar (link: Thompson)
    • Paint tray with several small depressions (link: Amazon or Michaels)
    • 2 squeeze bottle or eye droppers (link: Amazon on Michaels)
    • Medium or Large 40 mesh sifter (link: Thompson)
    • Micron Pigma marker any size or color (link: Amazon on Micheals)

NOTES: The Amazon link may be to a package with more than the number needed

Sarah will have small spun copper bowls for sale at cost (~$12). 

You may have a chance to start enameling a second form. If you wish to buy a form the following are recommended (link: E-namels)

    • Small caldron
    • Porridge bowl
    • Thin goblet 
    • Small goblet
Optional materials:
    • 6”- 7” square 20 or 22 gauge copper sheet for raising
    • 1 – 4 ft fine silver cloisonne wire (link: Thompson)

Full tuition credit or a full refund minus a $15 cancellation fee.

40% credit minus a $15 cancellation fee.
