Discover the Art of Cuttlefish Casting
Join us for an exciting hands-on workshop exploring the ancient and fascinating technique of cuttlefish casting. This traditional method uses the internal shell of a cuttlefish as a natural mold for metal casting. The soft, layered bone is ideal for carving designs, making it a favorite for jewelers and metalsmiths who love organic textures and unique patterns. Each mold can only be used once, which means every piece you create is truly one-of-a-kind.
What You’ll Learn
In this immersive class, you’ll gain step-by-step guidance from experienced metalsmith Martha Soto. We’ll begin with an overview of the process, safety practices, and a brief history of cuttlefish casting. Then, you’ll dive into carving your design directly into the bone. Learn how to smooth the surface, plan your design, and apply creative techniques for textures and patterns.
After carving, you’ll experience the excitement of molten metal as we demonstrate safe heating and pouring techniques. Each student will pour their own metal into their personalized mold, creating a finished piece that reflects your unique style. Finally, you’ll refine your work by cutting away the sprue, filing edges, and polishing your piece to perfection.
