Skill Level: Beginner

You’ll discover the exciting world of kiln-fired enamel — where powdered glass is fused to metal to create vibrant, durable surfaces. Whether you’re new to jewelry or just curious about adding bold color to your work, this class is a fantastic place to begin.

What You’ll Learn

Throughout this evening workshop, instructor Alex Gelderman will walk you through the foundational skills needed to start enameling with confidence. First, you’ll prepare copper squares, which serve as your creative canvas. Then, you’ll apply enamel powder using dry sifting techniques — layering color and experimenting with patterns and textures as you go.

Along the way, you’ll explore:

  • How to apply enamel evenly and safely

  • When and how to layer colors for more visual impact

  • How kiln firing transforms powder into glass

  • Basic troubleshooting tips to help avoid common mistakes

As you work, you’ll gain insight into how enamel reacts to heat and layering, giving you a stronger understanding of how to control your results. By the end of class, you’ll have several finished pieces and a solid foundation to build on.

Why Take Enameling Essentials?

Not only is this beginner enameling class fun and approachable — it’s also a great stepping stone into more advanced jewelry practices. If you enjoy this session, consider pairing it with classes like Silver Stacked Rings or Benchwork Basics, where you can incorporate enamel into your own handmade designs.

All tools and enamels are provided, and the kit fee includes everything you’ll need. Feel free to bring your own enamel, but all you need to bring is a curiosity for color on metal.
